X Im!possible

A Backyard Ultra race in Zurich

X Im!possible is an official Backyard Ultra race taking place on Zurich’s Uetliberg.
Born from the X Uetli community, the project evolved into a fully independent event — structured, sponsored and officially registered with Big’s Backyard Ultra.

The first edition will take place in April 2026, featuring one of the most demanding Backyard loops in the world.

Overview

X Im!possible is the first official Backyard Ultra on Zurich’s local mountain.

The format follows the classic Backyard Ultra rules: a 6.706 km loop starting every hour, repeated until only one runner remains. What sets this race apart is the terrain — approximately 380 metres of elevation gain per loop — turning the event into a combined Backyard Ultra and Everesting challenge.

The Context

Backyard Ultras are often associated with flat or rolling terrain.
X Im!possible intentionally challenges this convention by placing the loop on a steep, technical mountain course. The result is not a race designed for records, but for commitment, endurance and personal limits.

The event remains open in spirit: some runners aim for a few loops, others push far beyond. The emphasis is on shared experience rather than competition alone.

The Approach

Identity & Naming

The identity of X Im!possible was developed as a distinct visual system, separate from X Uetli while remaining conceptually connected.
The name reflects the nature of the challenge itself — something that appears unrealistic at first glance, yet becomes approachable through structure, community and repetition.

The logo and visual language were designed to be bold, minimal and adaptable across digital platforms, sponsor communication and physical event materials.

Website & Registration

A dedicated website was created to support the event from announcement to race day.
It includes clear information about the format, loop details and rules, as well as an integrated registration system with limited capacity.

The platform is designed for clarity and reliability, prioritising essential information and a frictionless registration flow.

Community & Preparation

Ahead of the race, multiple community runs were organised — both on the official loop and in collaboration with partners. These runs serve as preparation, testing and community-building moments, allowing participants to experience the course before race day.

X Im!possible is supported by X-Bionic as the main sponsor, contributing to logistics, race equipment and participant rewards. Additional partners are involved, with more to follow.

Tracking & Race Day

For race day, a simple live tracking system is being developed to show which runners are still in the race as the hours pass.
The focus remains on clarity rather than spectacle — supporting runners, spectators and organisers throughout the event.

The Result

X Im!possible represents a step from informal community runs to a fully structured endurance event. It combines identity design, digital infrastructure and event communication into a single, coherent platform — while staying true to the inclusive spirit it originated from.

Reflections

X Im!possible shows how a community-driven idea can evolve into a formal event without losing its character.
It demonstrates the role of design not as decoration, but as structure — enabling clarity, participation and trust in a demanding physical context.
